Backup and data protection

Know what is protected and what recovery depends on

Protect important business data and understand the practical steps needed to recover it.

01

A backup status is not the whole answer

A successful backup message says that a task completed. It does not explain which data is protected, how long it is retained or what a full recovery depends on.

We start with what the business must protect and how recovery needs to work.

  • Important files, applications and systems
  • Backup frequency and retained history
  • Storage location and separation
  • Failure monitoring and responsibility
  • Recovery priorities and testing

02

Backup is not the same as sync

OneDrive and SharePoint help people store, share and synchronise files. Their native recovery features are useful, but they are not the same as every independent backup requirement.

The right approach depends on the data, retention needs and recovery risks. We do not tell every business that it needs the same product.

03

Protection for devices, servers and cloud data

The agreed service can protect workstation data, physical or virtual servers and Microsoft 365 data.

Products, capacity, retained history and recovery arrangements are confirmed in the quotation rather than assumed.

  • Workstation file-and-folder or image backup
  • Physical and virtual server backup
  • Microsoft 365 backup
  • Retention and capacity options
  • Agreed recovery assistance

04

Microsoft 365 data

Microsoft 365 includes native retention and recovery features. Those features may not meet every need for backup history, separation or recovery.

We help you understand the difference and decide whether a separately scoped Microsoft 365 backup service is suitable.

05

Recovery planning and testing

A useful recovery plan identifies who acts, which service is restored first and what evidence shows that the backup can be used.

Where recovery testing forms part of the agreement, the scope and timing of the test are defined. A dashboard status alone is not a recovery test.

06

Ransomware and recovery

Backup can support recovery after ransomware, but it does not stop ransomware from entering the environment.

A sound approach also needs suitable security, access controls and response planning. No backup service can guarantee recovery in every situation.

  • Protect backup access
  • Keep appropriate recovery history
  • Separate critical recovery data where required
  • Agree the recovery responsibilities

Common questions

Scope the service around the recovery need

Using OneDrive does not automatically answer whether a separate backup is needed. Retention, separation and recovery requirements determine the answer.

Backup is not bundled into Core or Plus. It is added and priced according to the customer's needs, or included where an individual Enhanced agreement says so.

Retention periods and recovery options depend on the selected service and must be stated in the quotation or agreement.
